An irate mob of residents of Calabar, capital of Cross River state hacked a young man to death and burnt his body in a fit of anger after the young man was accused of stealing a pot of soup from a woman in the city.
The mob took the law into it’s hands and dispensed justice on the man, he was caught around the Atu Secondary school area of the metropolis. Eyewitnesses report that the young man assisted by two of his friends had earlier attacked the woman at the Mayne Avenue Extension of the city and carted away her pot of soup.
They men were allegedly drawn-in by the aroma of the woman’s pot of soup, which she was steaming for breakfast, which she intended to take before attending the early morning mass, at a near-by Catholic church. The robbers who almost made it out of the compound with the pot of soup but were undone when the woman raised an alarm, which attracted neighbor’s and passers-by.
The late robber was the unfortunate one as two of his colleagues escaped from the scene. Unfortunately for him he was the one carrying the pot of soup, which slowed him down and allowed the mob to catch up with him, the mob cut him severally with a machete before he was set ablaze.
Hear what one eyewitness had to say, “It was almost dawn when the boys attacked the woman and carried away her pot of soup. When they were about getting out of the compound, she raised alarm and people came out, pursued and caught one of them.”
He added the young man was not able to run as fast as his accomplices because of the pot of soup, which he refused to drop. Apparently, the area has been afflicted by an incidence of robberies lately with phones and handbags being snatched from local residents.
